Awards, wedding dress and 300 more personal belongings of Paul Newman and his wife, Joanne Woodward to be auctioned in June
Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were married for more than 50 years and were regarded as one of Hollywood’s best-loved star couples. Now more than 300 of their personal artefacts will be auctioned by Sotheby’s in June 2023.
The personal belongings include Joanne's wedding dress, which she wore in 1958, their family photographs, signed scripts, besides awards and costumes from their old films. In previous auctions, two of Paul Newman’s watches were sold for staggering amounts, well beyond their actual value. This time around, too, the wedding dress has been fixed at approximately $1,200, while an embroidered suit worn by the late Newman at a motor racing event is expected to fetch $25,000. But even these estimates are on the lower side. When the auction actually takes place, things that have been valued at just $500 could end up with bids as high as $25,000. The proceeds collected from the auction will go to the family of the couple.
The handsome couple were both Academy Award winners and were well-known philanthropists. The family describes them as a couple who “dedicated their lives to pursuing the things that inspired them”. The 300 objects on sale give a glimpse into their lives, which shows they were far beyond than just glamorous Hollywood stars.
