Back in 2016, only a handful of women like Patty Jenkins, Ava DuVernay, Kathryn Bigelow, Lana and Lilly Wachowski, Mimi Leder were hired to direct big films with mega budgets. Come 2020, and that is about to change big time. Five major superhero movies next year will be directed by women. These include ‘Birds of Prey’ by
Cathy Yan (February 7), ‘Mulan’ by Niki Caro (March 27), ‘Black Widow’ by Cate Shortland (May 1) and ‘
Wonder Woman
1984’ by
Patty Jenkins (June 5) and ‘Eternals’ by
Chloé Zhao
(November 6). In fact, ‘Eternals’ features characters played by
Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek and Gemma Chan, making it a strong team.
Women across the world are hailing this as a step in the right direction. And even if some of these films don’t set the box office on fire, collectively these filmmakers will smash conventional thought that women cannot handle making big budget Hollywood films. There is hope that this will result in more opportunities for women filmmakers and equal pay, not to mention more women winners at the award shows. People are also applauding studios for recognising women filmmakers and giving them popular film franchises to handle.
