Friends’ Instagram page pays tribute to Matthew Perry on what would have been his 55th birthday

On Monday, August 19, 2024, the official Instagram account for the popular TV show Friends honored the late actor Matthew Perry, who would have turned 55 that day. Perry, who played the beloved character Chandler Bing on the show, passed away on October 28, 2023, due to a tragic incident involving a drug overdose and drowning at his home in the Pacific Palisades.

The tribute post featured a photo of Perry and a heartfelt caption that read, "On this day, we remember the light that was Matthew Perry." This simple but touching message served as a reminder of the joy and laughter he brought to fans around the world through his role on Friends.

Following Perry’s death, his co-stars from Friends—Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer—shared their deep sadness in a joint statement. They expressed that losing Perry felt like losing a family member, not just a colleague. They noted the difficulty in finding the right words during such a painful time, saying, "We’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time, we will say more, as and when we are able." The cast members also extended their thoughts and love to Perry’s family, friends, and the countless fans who adored him worldwide.

The creators of Friends, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, along with the show’s producer Kevin Bright, also expressed their sorrow. Bright, in particular, reflected on how Perry’s unique talent made him the perfect fit for the role of Chandler Bing from the very beginning. He mentioned that working with Perry was an unforgettable experience, and it was hard to believe that they would no longer have the opportunity to do so.

Months after Perry’s untimely death, authorities made arrests in connection to the tragedy. Five individuals, including Jasveen Sangha, known as the “Ketamine Queen,” Kenneth Iwamasa, Perry’s assistant, Erik Fleming, a producer, and doctors Salvador Plascencia and Mark Chavez, were taken into custody. They were accused of supplying Perry with ketamine, the substance that contributed to his death. Authorities reported that these individuals exploited Perry’s struggles with addiction for financial gain.

Matthew Perry may no longer be with us, but his legacy as Chandler Bing and the joy he brought to millions of fans around the world will never be forgotten.
