Fighting the hardships
The 81st Golden Globes Awards, a pivotal event in the awards season, will mark its return on CBS, bringing the glitz and glamour back to television screens. Behind the scenes, the awards have undergone a transformative journey, triggered by a damning report in the Los Angeles Times in 2021. The absence of Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the voting body, led to widespread criticism, prompting a boycott by stars and studios, and NBC's decision to skip airing the event in 2022.

In response to the crisis, the HFPA took significant steps to address ethical concerns, including the addition of journalists of colour and other reforms. The 2023 edition of the Golden Globes marked a comeback under a one-year probationary agreement with NBC, but the network chose not to renew. In June, Todd Boehly acquired the assets of the HFPA, steering the Golden Globes into a new chapter as a for-profit organisation.
