Kate Winslet to direct her first film ‘Goodbye June’ for Netflix

Renowned actress Kate Winslet, famous for her roles in Titanic, Quills, and Hamlet, is set to make her directorial debut with a new Netflix film titled Goodbye June. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Winslet will not only direct but also act and produce the movie.

The film will feature an impressive cast, including Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall, and Helen Mirren. The screenplay has been written by Joe Anders, Winslet’s son from her marriage to Sam Mendes, while Kate Solomon will co-produce alongside Winslet.

Netflix has described Goodbye June as a touching yet humorous drama, focusing on a group of siblings who come together during a difficult time. The film is set to start production in the United Kingdom soon

While promoting her recent film Lee, Winslet revealed on Elizabeth Day’s How to Fail podcast that she had long resisted the idea of directing. She admitted that many people on film sets—both actors and crew members—often asked her why she hadn’t taken up directing. Initially, she brushed off the idea, but over time, she felt a growing responsibility to encourage more women in Hollywood to step behind the camera.

She explained, "The more of us that do it, the more we inspire others to do the same." Winslet also mentioned that she now feels confident about directing, as she has gained a strong understanding of the technical aspects of filmmaking.

Winslet has already made a mark in the industry with her powerful performances. She won an Oscar in 2009 for her role in The Reader and recently received a Golden Globe nomination for her work in the HBO series The Regime. She also starred in Lee, a biopic about World War II photographer Lee Miller, which was nominated for a BAFTA for Outstanding British Film of the Year.

With Goodbye June, Winslet is stepping into a new role as a filmmaker, adding another milestone to her already remarkable career.
