When Matthew Perry spoke about being a father: I think I'd be great
Matthew Perry, known for his iconic role in ‘Friends,’ candidly expressed his desire for lasting love and fatherhood just a year before his tragic demise. In an interview in October 2022, the actor, who was found dead at his Los Angeles home at the age of 54, revealed that he had long struggled with intimacy, often ending relationships himself.
Perry, who had high-profile romances with stars like Julia Roberts and Lizzy Caplan, confessed to being the one to usually call it quits in relationships. He told People, "That was me afraid. I manifest something that's wrong with them, and then I break up with them. But there can't be something wrong with everyone. I'm the common denominator. I left first because I thought they were going to annihilate me."
His ongoing battle with drug and alcohol addiction, spanning 27 years, also complicated his love life, leading to multiple rehab stays between the mid-1990s and early 2020s. However, Perry revealed that he had finally conquered his "fear" of love after achieving sobriety in May 2021, "I'm not run by the fear I used to be run by, so everything's kind of different," he said of his newfound confidence. "I'm feeling more confident and I'm not afraid of love anymore, so the next girl I go out with better watch out."
With sobriety, Perry gained a fresh perspective on finding a lifelong partner. He explained, "The thing that's changed about me is I have no interest in hanging out with somebody that I don't know or somebody that I'm not that into. The next person I really take seriously is somebody that I'm going to be in love with and not be scared by the things that used to scare me."
Perry eagerly looked forward to the prospect of becoming a father, expressing his confidence in his parenting abilities. He had stated, "I think I'd be great. I really do. I grew up with a lot of little kids around me, and that's probably why, but I can't wait."
Throughout his life, Perry had notable relationships, including one with Julia Roberts from 1995 to 1996. His most extended romance was with Lizzy Caplan, lasting six years from 2006 to 2012. Perry later became engaged to literary agent Molly Hurwitz in November 2020, but they parted ways in June the following year.
