The Writers Guild of America are on strike and some shows that depend on regularly updated current affairs shown on TV are already shutting down. It has reminded people of things shutting down during the time of the Covid lockdowns. The strike by the WGA has happened after 15 years and this time it is about their ongoing labour dispute between writers and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
Their complaint is that they get a very small share of the pie that streaming services and channels make on the shows that they air and which are not possible without these writers. Already, late-night shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Late Show, Tonight and Late Night have literally shut down for new content and are making do with repeats.
Democracy Now had put up a tweet on May 2 when the writers began their strike. The tweet said, that the writers are “fighting for a living wage in the streaming era”.
Writer-producer of Cobra Kai fame,
Jon Hurwitz tweeted on behalf of writers and screenwriters, “We hate to strike, but if we must, we strike hard. Pencils down in the Cobra Kai writers room. No writers on set. These aren't fun times, but it's unfortunately necessary. The moment a fair deal is in place, we'll get back to kicking ass. In the meantime, sending strength and support to the negotiating committee.”
Let’s hope a deal is worked out soon so that everyone is happy.
