'Wuthering Heights' Twitter reviews: Emerald Fennell’s period romance divides viewers; praised for visuals and performances, criticised as boring and unfaithful
Emerald Fennell’s 'Wuthering Heights', starring Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, arrived in cinemas on February 13, and online reactions are sharply divided. Some viewers are hailing it as an overwhelming, swoon-worthy experience, while others admire the beauty but feel the drama never quite ignites.
'Wuthering Heights' is a period romantic drama written and directed by Emerald Fennell, adapted from Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel. The ensemble includes Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, Alison Oliver, Martin Clunes, and Ewan Mitchell. The film premiered at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on January 28 before its worldwide theatrical rollout. Critical responses have been mixed, and the first wave of social chatter mirrors that range.
One viewer wrote, “Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights is utterly GORGEOUS & soul-shaking on 2nd watch – especially in IMAX. I’m a wreck all over again. Margot Robbie, Jacob Elordi & Alison Oliver deliver towering performances. The crafts work is awe-inducing & immersive.”
Another widely shared reaction read, “i will never recover after watching wuthering heights.”
A different post said, “Emerald Fennell has a stunning vision behind the lens showcasing dreamy dollhouse sets, fairytale-esque cinematography, & luscious gowns which come undone to make Wuthering Heights a visual feast. Your eyes crave the spectacle, even if your mind wanders for a stronger plot.”
One enthusiastic response read, “Wuthering Heights is tailor-made for the hopeless romantics. A relentlessly beautiful, shocking and stunning epic of a love story that takes words like ‘subtlety’ out back to be put out of their misery. Lavish costumes, gorgeous cinematography, stunning production design and a soundtrack that will leave many fainting; this is the complete package.
Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie are made for each other and you can feel the passion, the yearning and the commitment required to bring Emerald Fennell’s vision to life.
No, I haven’t read the book, nor am I ever interested in reading it either because this is the Wuthering Heights that was made for me; and many like me.
The Best Film of 2026 and it’s not even close.”
Another viewer shared, “Personally, there’s a lot I enjoyed about this iteration of Wuthering Heights, and I’m leaning toward calling it a pretty good movie overall. The visual choices are very strong, the costumes are amazing, and the music really works. Margot Robbie was great, and Jacob Elordi felt perfectly cast as Heathcliff. I also really enjoyed how the story developed in the first half of the film.
There are parts of the second half I’m still on the fence about, but I do appreciate some of the creative swings they took.
Emerald Fennell has a very… distinct way of depicting sex and innuendo in her films. It can feel a bit grotesque in a way that really gets under your skin, and I suspect that will be a major talking point.
I had a good time with it, but I’m curious to see where the consensus lands.”
Not everyone was convinced. One reaction read, “‘wuthering heights’ commits the sin not only of being epically unfaithful to the novel but of being BORING— provocative? they couldn't even manage that gorgeous to look at, at least, great production.”
Another comment stated, “‘WUTHERING HEIGHTS’ is beautifully shot, and the costume and set design are immaculate! Sadly, outside of that, I am very much in the middle with this one. It's at its strongest when it is evil, and I think it fails when it wants to be a true romance.”
A further post added, “WUTHERING HEIGHTS— beautiful gowns, sets, and cinematography. i was up for passionate retelling of half the novel but this was terribly miscast and misunderstands Cathy and Heathcliffs relationship to each other and to other characters. there was no ‘wuthering’ in this heights.”
