'Resident Evil' is a survival horror video game franchise that has produced numerous film and television adaptations. The franchise has an enormous following thanks to its action-packed gameplay, captivating narratives and monstrous characters. Now, filmmaker Zach Cregger is bringing a new take on the franchise with a new 'Resident Evil' movie inspired by the games but with a storyline of its own.
Zach Cregger director of "Weapons" and "Barbarian," unveils the trailer for the new "Resident Evil" movie. The preview gives us a taste of the "all-new story" that is inspired by the games but is not a direct adaptation of any particular plot, nor is it connected to the previous movies or the television series.
The story and protagonist of 'Resident Evil'
The latest "Resident Evil" film follows a new character, Bryan (played by "Weapons" actor Austin Abrams), who is described as "a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos".
This plot is a new twist to the 'Resident Evil' franchise, taking a regular human and putting them in an extreme situation, rather than sticking to characters from the video games.
Zach Cregger's take on 'Resident Evil'
The Hollywood Reporter notes that Cregger at CinemaCon says he has played a lot of the video games in the franchise which just turned 30."If you love the games, you will feel their influence everywhere in the movie," he says.
Cregger directs 'Resident Evil' from a script he co-writes with Shay Hatten, known for his work on 'Army of the Dead' and 'Rebel Moon' films, as well as the 'John Wick' franchise. The collaboration brings together experienced storytellers who understand both the source material and action-driven narratives.
Cast of 'Resident Evil'
Austin Abrams leads the cast as Bryan. He is joined by Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser, who round out the ensemble. The cast brings a mix of talent capable of handling both horror and action sequences.
