Hollywood’s top grossers of 2015

Coming up with a great movie idea and getting people to pay to see it, is a challenge. Traditionally, war films, musicals and historical dramas have been the most popular genres, but franchise films have always been the safest bet for filmmakers. Besides Superman, James Bond and Star Trek films are still being released periodically, while the Star Wars saga and Planet of the Apes were reprised after a lengthy hiatus.

Jurassic World:

Jurassic Park serial released its fourth instalment this year starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in the lead role. The series consists of four parts, out of which two were based on the novel. The 4th instalment is a science fiction adventure film released on June 12, 2015 worldwide. The film proved to be the top grosser film this year. The film earned many positive reviews from the audience as well as the critics. After the record breaking opening at the box office the movie generated $1.669 billion. The next sequel is scheduled to release in June 2018.

The Fast and Furious franchise released its 7th instalment as Furious 7. The multi-starrer movie has Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, in its lead role. The movie was released in 3D, IMAX 3D and 4DX internationally. The movie grossed $1.515 billion worldwide. The movie was highest-grossing film in the franchise just after twelve days of its release. It’s also the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time according to the static data. The movie’s sequel is scheduled to release by April 2017.

Avengers: Age of Ultron:

The film is based on Marvel comics superhero team, Avengers. The film is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The movie is written and directed by Joss Whedon himself. The movie features Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, are casted in the lead role. The movie had a budget of $279.9 million which went on to cross $1.405 billion at the box office. It conquered the position of the sixth-highest-grossing film of all time. The two sequels Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 and part 2 are scheduled to be release May, 2018 and May, 2019 respectively.

Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin directed Minions is an animated comedy film. The movie’s fictional characters are narrated by Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, and Michael Keaton etc. The movie released this year July 11 worldwide grossed over $1.1 billion. With this it achieved the rank of 2nd highest-grossing animated film ever. The movie had the budget of $74million. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 56 out of 100, based on 35 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews."

The story is based on a girl who fantasises about five fictional characters in her mind while her parents force the girl to move to a new house in a different city. The girl in-fact personifies the emotions like Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust in the form of animated characters. The little girl’s character is played by Kaitlyn Dias. The story is penned down on real experiences of the director Pete Docter with his little daughter as she grew up. Film grossed $90.4 million in its first weekend and by the end managed to earn $851.3 million.

Mission: Impossible film series released its fifth instalment on July 31, 2015. Rogue Nation is a spy thriller film which began its shooting in August, 2014. The movie gained critical appreciation. Cast of the movie included Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Ving Rhames. Paramount Picture released the movie in North America that grossed over $195 million and $682 million worldwide.

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson-starrer Fifty Shades Of Grey is an erotic drama film. The movie is based on the novel by the same title. Universal Pictures released the movie in February this year worldwide. The movie had a budget of $40 million. The movie is currently the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2015. The franchise is yet to release its second and third and sequel named 50 Shades Darker in February 2017 and 50 Shades Freed in 2018.

Walt Disney Pictures came up with Cinderella this year in March, directed by Kenneth Branagh. The movie stars Lily James, Cate Blanchett and Richard Madden in the lead roles. World premiere was released in 65th Berlin International Film Festival. Although the movie had a budget of $95 million it crossed $540 million at the box office. This was the director’s highest-grosser film till date. The movie gained positive reviews by the critics.

It’s the twelfth instalment, directed by Peyton Reed. Film stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale in the lead role. With a budget of $130 million the movie went on to earn $518.2 million at the box office. The next sequel, titled Ant-Man and the Wasp, is scheduled to be released on July 6, 2018.

The movie scored positive as well as negative points on the critic’s rate card but managed to fair well at the box office. The movie was released in May, 2015, with budget of $110 million. American disaster themed film San Andreas was released worldwide in 2D and 3D theaters. The movie went on to gross $470 million worldwide.
