Future & Metro Boomin' claim top spot on Billboard 200 with 'We Don't Trust You'
Future and Metro Boomin's joint album "We Don't Trust You" makes an impressive debut, claiming the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart for the week of April 6. It not only secures the largest week by equivalent album units earned in 2024 but also garners significant streams for the album's tracks. This achievement marks Future's ninth No. 1 album and Metro Boomin's fourth, solidifying their status as prominent figures in the music industry.
The album debuts with 251,000 equivalent album units accrued in the United States during the week ending March 28, as reported by Luminate. This achievement is predominantly fueled by streaming, making it the most successful week for any album in 2024, Future's second-highest performing week, and Metro Boomin's most successful week to date.
In the latest Billboard 200 rankings, Olivia Rodrigo's acclaimed album "Guts" surges from 18th to 2nd place after a deluxe re-release featuring extra tracks. Additionally, Hozier's fresh four-song EP titled "Unheard" debuts impressively at No. 10, driven largely by the popularity of its streaming hit, "Too Sweet."
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the United States, utilizing a multi-metric consumption approach measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. These units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit is equivalent to one album sale, or the sale of 10 individual tracks from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported, or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The chart for the week of April 6, 2024, will be available in its entirety on Billboard's website on April 2. During its first week, "We Don't Trust You" amassed a total of 251,000 units. Of these, 245,000 units were from the Southeast Asian region, resulting in approximately 324.31 million streams across the set's 17 songs. Traditional album sales accounted for 4,500 units, with the album exclusively available for digital download through traditional platforms like iTunes and the Amazon Digital Music Store. Additionally, 1,500 units came from Track Equivalent Albums (TEA).
With 251,000 units sold, the album achieves the highest sales week of 2024, marking Metro Boomin's most successful week to date and Future's second-best week ever. Future's top week remains his collaboration with Drake on What a Time to Be Alive, which debuted with 375,000 units on the chart dated October 10, 2015, primarily driven by traditional album sales.
The total SEA (streaming equivalent album) figure of 245,000 for "We Don’t Trust You" equates to a staggering 324.31 million on-demand official streams for the songs within the collection. This marks the most significant streaming week for any album since Taylor Swift's "1989 (Taylor’s Version)" amassed 375.49 million clicks for its 21 tracks on the chart dated November 11, 2023. Notably, "We Don’t Trust You" also holds the record for the largest streaming week for any album by Future or Metro Boomin.
The first album of a two-part project, "We Don't Trust You," was announced on March 8, with its sequel, "We Still Don't Trust You," set to release on April 12.
"We Don't Trust You" was initially released on March 22 across digital platforms without disclosing its featured artists. It wasn't until a few days later that the tracklist was updated to reveal the impressive lineup, which includes Kendrick Lamar, Playboi Carti, Rick Ross, Travis Scott, and The Weeknd.
The week's top-streamed song on the album is "Like That," a collaboration featuring Future, Metro Boomin, and Kendrick Lamar. Its release caused a frenzy on social media. In the track, Lamar delivers pointed lyrics, seemingly aimed at Drake and J. Cole.
Olivia Rodrigo's album "Guts" soars from 18th to 2nd place on the Billboard 200 chart, racking up 73,000 equivalent album units, marking a staggering 155% increase. The album makes a remarkable comeback after the release of its deluxe edition, titled "Guts [Spilled]," on March 22. This edition includes five additional tracks and was made available as a digital download and on various streaming platforms. While a deluxe physical version isn't currently on the market, it is slated for release on vinyl on July 19th.
Four out of the five additional songs, namely "Obsessed," "Girl I've Always Been," "Scared of My Guitar," and "Stranger," had already been released as bonus tracks on vinyl editions of the original Guts album last year. These tracks were later compiled into a four-song vinyl EP titled Guts: The Secret Tracks, which was made available for Record Store Day Black Friday last November. The fifth song added to the new Guts deluxe edition is "So American," which had never been released before.
On the Billboard 200, Guts rises to its highest position since the list dated October 7, 2023, when it also held the No. 2 spot in its third week on the chart.
Next on the Billboard 200, we see a former No. 1 duo taking their spots. Ariana Grande's "Eternal Sunshine" slips from its top position to No. 3 in its third week, accumulating 72,000 equivalent album units, a decline of 29%. Similarly, Morgan Wallen's "One Thing at a Time" moves down from No. 3 to No. 4 with 68,000 units, experiencing a mere 3% drop. Holding steady at No. 5 is Noah Kahan's "Stick Season" with 44,000 units, showing no significant change from the previous week.
In the latest chart, positions 6 through 9 are occupied by former chart-toppers, all maintaining their positions from the previous week. SZA's "SOS" holds the No. 6 spot with 41,000 units sold, showing a slight decrease of 6%. Taylor Swift's "Lover" sits at No. 7 with 40,000 units sold, experiencing a marginal decline of 1%. Zach Bryan's self-titled album retains its No. 8 position with 39,000 units sold, seeing a decrease of 3%. Meanwhile, Swift's "1989 (Taylor's Version)" remains steady at No. 9 with 38,000 units sold, marking a 4% decrease.
Hozier secures the tenth spot on the latest Billboard 200 chart with his new EP, Unheard, making its debut. The EP garnered nearly 38,000 equivalent album units, primarily driven by streaming activity. Among these, streaming equivalent album (SEA) units accounted for 34,000, equivalent to approximately 44.15 million on-demand official streams of the EP's four songs, while album sales contributed 3,000 units, with negligible TEA units. Unheard marks Hozier's fourth appearance in the top 10 of the Billboard chart, following Unreal Unearth (No. 3, 2023), Wasteland, Baby! (No. 1, 2019), and his self-titled album (No. 2, 2014).
Unheard compiles four songs originally recorded for Unreal Unearth but left off the final album. One of these tracks, "Too Sweet," has garnered significant attention, largely driving the streaming activity of Unheard. The song gained initial exposure through a teaser snippet featured during Hozier's appearance on the How Long Gone podcast on March 6. The snippet quickly went viral among the artist's fanbase, spreading further on platforms like TikTok before finding a welcoming audience on streaming services.
