Pop: Following the news of his shocking death earlier this week, David Bowies 25th studio album 'Blackstar' sounds like a compilation at first. Sue (Or In a Season of Crime) was first featured on his 2014 compilation 'Nothing Has Changed'; Tis a Pity She Was a Whore was its B-side. The title track appeared last year on the television series The Last Panthers.

However, the album will find place of prime, not just for being Ziggy Stardusts last album but also its quality. The soundtrack to the Samantha-Morton-starring crime drama The Last Panthers, the title track 'Blackstar' is an effortless and nocturnal piece of score work. Sue (Or In a Season of Crime) is an urgent plea to the unknowable title character by the narrator. On Girl Loves Me, a slowly-striding beat and electronically-syncopated drums which recall DJ Shadows surge delicately, but its the quotable lyrical playfulness which provides the pleasure. Dollar Days has Bowie reminiscing over English evergreens and a former love. Despite the epic scope, its a piece of relative warmth. I Cant Give Everything Away continues in the same vein as Dollar Days. The music is bright, and based around upbeat keyboards and a bit of harmonica alongside the sax. Bowies voice sounds most connected to that of his youth.
