Blues: A quick listening session of this album will reveal it to have a certain energy and zest that belies the fact that this musician will be turning 80 next year. You wouldn't get an inkling of that on Born To Play Guitar, you're listening to a musician of the kind of vintage that will in all likelihood, predate the day you were born. Yes, it's that good. The music sounds just as strong and bright and as contemporary as ever. Guy's brand of blues is that of the Chicago style, which features blues melded with a rock style. Purists who believe that blues and rock make unlikely companions will be pleasantly surprised to find that this combination works pretty well. It anything, it is quite simply, evidence of his versatility. Although his sweet-toned guitar sounds deliciously bluesy, his raw voice adds a delightfully interesting rough edge to the music. He plays tribute to co-conspirators of yore in Come Back Muddy, a shout out to

Muddy Waters

. Flesh And Bone is a doff of the hat to

BB King

, with

Van Morrison

on vocal duties too. The combination of talent and feeling on this song makes it one of the highlights on the record. Then of course, there is Wear You Out, a naughty track (with ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons on guitar too) about wearing out someone in the best way possible. This song also reminds us that the blues does have an element of raw sexuality to it. (Baby) You Got What It Takes, Too Late and Kiss Me Quick feature some nice harmonica. One of the best albums in his oeuvre.
