Album: Damn The Torpedoes
Composers: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Music: Geffen
Rock’n’ roll /folk: A remaster of a classic album, this one is worthy of note because of the fantastic, rich and warm sound quality that this work benefits from. This is easily the best album released by Tom Petty and essential for anyone who wants a slice of some simple, catchy, melodic rock ‘n’ roll.
While a greatest hits package might be all very well, the ‘flow’ on some ‘best-of’ packages just isn’t that consistent. Accordingly, this original album is consistently good. If you prefer the youthful creativity of a musician in his prime to the mellower, acoustic strumming of his later work, this you can’t go wrong with this. Every song is tightly crafted, replete with that signature 12-string, jangly Rickebnacker guitar sound and manages to convey emotions ranging from elation to sadness with equal ease. American Girl shows Rolling Stones and Byrds influences. Don’t Do Me Like That, Refugee and Here Comes My Girl also epitomise the ‘less is more’ school of guitar playing, where lead guitarist Mike Campbell manages to tease the most out of the bare minimum of notes. Other good cuts are Even The Losers and Shadow Of A Doubt, which round off the album.
