BIFFes moves venues to expand space for cinema and conversations
The Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFes) returns this year with a significant change — a move from its long-time venue at Orion Mall to Lulu Mall — a shift that has sparked conversations among regular attendees even as anticipation builds around the festival’s diverse programming and thematic focus. Here’s what you need to know:
WHY THE CHANGE IN VENUE
Murali PB, artistic director of the 17th edition of BIFFes, says the move was made after carefully as sessing infrastructure needs. “While PVR at Orion Mall has 11 screens with a total seating capacity of 2,650, Cinepolis at Lulu Mall also offers 11 screens, though with a slightly lower seating capacity of 2,052,” he explains. However, the decision was not driven by screen count alone. “At Orion, whenever we hosted masterclasses or seminars, we had to block at least three screens, which meant compromising on film screenings,” Murali says. “At Lulu Mall, we have access to a separate space on another floor that can comfortably seat 250 to 300 people for masterclasses, without affecting the screening schedule.” The shift, he emphasises, was made purely for better accommodation and smoother programming.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE FEST
This edition of BIFFes places a strong focus on women’s empowerment, inspired by the poem, Stree Yendare Ashte Saake (Woman As She Is) by national poet Dr GS Shivarudrappa. The festival carries the tagline ‘Woman: Shared Sensibilities, A Collective Voice for Equality’. International premieres, curated world cinema, masterclasses, workshops, and panel discussions are set to be part of the festival.
HOW TO GET TO THE VENUE
With a Metro connection unavailable, organisers are considering adding shuttle services for commuters from the Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna station to the mall. Bus users have the advantage of a bus stop located right outside the venue, making access relatively convenient.
