Mario Menezes' Bhurgem Tem Bhurgem is the new tiatr in town

Mario Menezes

’ 49th production

Bhurgem Tem Bhurgem

deals with the humiliation, trauma and abuse faced by women who can’t conceive, and are mistreated by not just society, but their own families. It focuses on this social issue through the story of one family.
The only son of Mario (Mario Menezes) and Roshela(Maria) – Cristo (Francis) – is about to marry Rosane (Melisa). Roshela considers Rosane more like her own daughter than a daughter-in-law. However, all that changes when Roshela’s nephew Prince (Princewell) arrives from Mumbai on the eve of the wedding, paving the way for disunity and discord in this otherwise peaceful and content family. Thereafter, Roshela, at the behest of Prince, starts making life miserable for Rosane, who hasn’t been able to conceive a child. She goes so far as to pressurizes Rosane to divorce her son.
The three hour family drama, though intense, has ample light moments throughout, provided by Loraine’s actor son, Bladwin (Bladwin). His mimicry of the popular comedians of the

tiatr

stage, such as Selvy, Humbert, Kuis Bachchan, and Agostinho had the audience in splits.
Melisa and Francis performed well, while Maria and Mario stood out in their respective roles, as the dominating mother and hen-pecked father. Princewel’s performance as the manipulative cousin was forceful and resounding. Movin was great in his supporting role, while Joana, Bladwin and Seby provided comic relief.
In the songs section as well, Bladwin’s clown act stood out. Lawry’s solo as well as his duet with Rioma was impressive. As was the solo by Rioma and the duo by Princewel-Movin. Tony de Ribandar and Melisa’s duet, and Bladwin and Joana’s number also deserve a mention. The opening song was rendered well by Movin. Among the three cantos of the

play

, Melisa’s emotional narration of her deplorable saga was the best.
The music by Agnelo Lobo and his team was melodious and enhanced the play, while Saldanha and Chari’s sets, and Jaison’s lighting, could have been better. The costumes too could have been improved upon.
Overall, with a punchy script and witty dialogues, Bhurgem Tem Bhurgem provides entertainment to satisfy all tastes and is an enjoyable fare.
