Retelling a great story via jazz

The evening was a toast to jazz, friendship and more importantly to

Braz Gonsalves

. The

Raga Rock

event held at Kala Academy saw a house full auditorium with people being turned away for the lack of seats. It was a trip down memory lane as Braz and Louis Banks performed some of the greatest

jazz

hits, including My Funny Valentine, Little Sunflower, Angel Eyes and the original composition by Louis Banks called Shanti. The amicable camaraderie was very visible between the two greats, who were ably supported by Karl Peters at the bass guitar, Lester Godhino at the drums and Braz’ grandson Jarryd at the second saxophone.

The event kicked off with a musical to celebrate the life of the saxophonist. Braz now in his 80s’ was seen enjoying a replay of his life on stage by the children from across Goa, including four boys from Bethesda Life Centre who were trained by the Maria Meireles, from Portugal as the musical director, Jazz pianist, Jason Quadros and Sandeep Doifode. The musical played out scenes from Braz’ childhood, his circus days, to his journey to Mumbai, meeting the love of his life and eventually the tragedy that changed his life and turned him towards Goa and gospel music. The musical was followed by a performance by goan band

Coffee Cats

who played some jazz numbers in their own style.
