Bird diversity increases in Neyyar & Peppara: Bird surveys help identify weather-related & ecological changes around us
We have this connection with nature as children, which we often lose growing up. As an architect, it’s important for me to maintain this connection with nature, and birds are an important part of the nature,” says Liza RS, who recently took part in a bird survey held in Thiruvananthapuram.
Calling it a rewarding experience, Liza, who camped at Pandipath, located in Peppara region, elaborates, “While I am not a big-time birder, birds are an extension of nature. It was a rewarding experience to check out the endemic bird species in the region with experienced birders. They would click photos and then, we’d check the details to figure out the type. I’m a sustainable life practitioner and even as an architect, I don’t like disturbing the natural terrain of a place. The three days of this bird survey at Pandipath was like three days in heaven."
The bird surveys were held in the Neyyar and Peppara wildlife sanctuaries, which are part of the biodiversity-rich Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve. The surveys were conducted jointly by the Thiruvananthapuram Wildlife Division and Warblers and Waders.“We recorded a notable increase in bird diversity here compared to previous years. However, there was a decrease in the number of birds, but that could be because the migratory season is over and also due to low food availability in the hot weather. The survey team consisted of 40 members,” shares C Susanth, an ornithologist, representing the birdwatchers’ group Warblers and Waders.
Talking about the significance of such surveys, he says, “This survey is a continuous process that needs to be carried out as it helps us identify the changes around us, and determine whether they are weather-related or ecological,” says Susanth.
He says that anyone can join the birders for these surveys. “We often have youngsters participating, but the numbers are still low. Hopefully, that will change,” he signs off.
Findings of the survey:159 bird species in Neyyar & 151 in Peppara - a significant rise from the 2024 numbers, 135 and 90, respectively.
