Stage set for healthy discussions by debate community in state capital
Thiruvananthapuram now has a debate community; providing people a space to discuss anything and everything with logic and reasoning. Named Tatvika Avalokanam, based on a classic dialogue from cult political satire, Sandesham, the community announces its meet-up via social media.
“On social media, discussions escalate to negativity, without a moderator. Here, person participating in our debates get to speak from both sides. Most people who show up are often willing to accommodate and understand. They are also eager to learn and this helps us to take it forward in a healthy way,” said Abhishekh Ajayakumar who co-founded the community with his wife Nicholette Jerome.
Abhishek further says, "We don’t reveal the debate topic ahead of the meet up. While in depth knowledge of a subject is appreciated, we feel that speaking extempore enables more logical thinking. We are also exploring different formats of debates without sticking to one format. We have two moderators who research these subjects before we conduct the debate."
Topics vary and covers a wide range of things
According to Abhishek, they are open to discussing anything under the sun. “The topic of discussions vary and so far we have discussed things like...Should transgenders have a separate category in sports? Should generative AI in art be regulated? Should the capital be changed from Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam? And so on,” he says.
