Heritage walks and symposium highlight Awadh’s culture
Lucknow marked World Heritage Day with a series of events organised by INTACH Lucknow Chapter in partnership with the Archaeological Survey of India, along with participation from schools and colleges. The programme combined heritage walks and a symposium focused on Awadh’s intangible cultural heritage.
A heritage walk through Hazratganj, led by AK Srivastava, began at Sibtainabad Imambara and covered sites including Kothi Noor Baksh, Tarawali Kothi, Kankar Wali Kothi and the Delhi & London Bank, along with the DRM Office of Northern Railway and locations linked to the Indian Rebellion of 1857. A second walk at the Lucknow Residency, held with ASI, introduced participants to the site’s layered history and architecture.
The celebrations concluded with a symposium titled ‘Avadh’s Intangible Cultural Heritage: Folk Traditions, Performing Arts, Literature and Songs’. The first panel on “Folk Theatre of Awadh” featured Surya Mohan Kulshreshtha, Gopal Sinha, Lalit Pokhariya and Prafulla Tripathi, who discussed traditional and contemporary theatre practices and the need for documentation and institutional support.
The second panel, “Folk Traditions of Awadh: Tradition and Identity”, included Vidya Bindu Singh and Vineeta Mishra, who spoke about the relevance of Awadhi language and oral traditions.
A segment on the Mirasins, a community of women performers, featured live songs by Imrana, Rafiya Khatoon, Rubina and Farzana, highlighting their role in preserving folk traditions associated with social occasions.
