Fantasia - An Anthology of Visual Music

concert

curated and conceptualized by Jayant S of the

Pune Guitar Society

, was focused on presenting musical works which had an indirect visual element in them. The first half of the concert had Jayant on the guitar and Rose on piano, the concert started with a work composed by the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer. 'Concerto Elegiaco', a work written for guitar and orchestra was performed on the guitar and piano. After 'Elegiaco' the evening progressed into a very cinematic work, the 'Fantasia' composed by the Italian Jewish composer Castelnuovo-Tedesco. The first half of the concert came to an end with the

Jazz

standard 'Spain' by one of the greatest Jazz pianists Chick Corea. After a quick break, the second half had a great lineup of Jazz standards made famous by the great Jazz pianist/composer Bill Evans. The second half featured Jayant on the upright bass and Rose on the piano. The sound of the Bass and the piano merged and diverged at different points creating an intricate sonic texture to be relished. With lilting swing rhythms and amazingly improvised solos by both artists, the rainy evening was laced with a rhythmic vitality and spontaneous musical expression. After an incredibly energetic Jazz set, the concert came to an end with a tribute to the late French film composer Michel Legrand with his song 'Summer Knows'. This concert was also unique for another reason. Artist, painter, calligrapher and educator Aditi Deo was a part of the event and she created some beautiful

art

work improvising while listening to the music. The audience loved her work and her ability to create something beautiful in the moment. In spite of it being a weekday and incessant rains, Punekars turned up in good numbers to listen and to soak in sounds of western classical

music

and jazz.
