Fish has become a major political flashpoint in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, with the BJP and TMC engaging in a sharp exchange over food habits and cultural identity. The controversy gained momentum after Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of threatening Bengali food traditions, particularly fish consumption. In response, BJP leaders have launched symbolic outreach campaigns, including public appearances with fish and “fish parties”, to counter the narrative. BJP candidate Anindya Raju Banerjee has asserted that there will be no restrictions on food practices and has invited TMC leaders to join such events.
