The festival of
Janmasthami
is here, celebrating the birth of
Hindu
God Lord
Krishna. And on this special occasion ETimes got in touch with popular
Dhollywood
actor
Shyam Nair, who opened up about Janmasthami celebrations with his family and special childhood memories about the festival.
What is the importance of Janmashthami for you and your family?Janmashthami is a very special day for me because Lord Krishna has a very deep influence on my upbringing, my mother strongly believes in Lord Krishna. That is one of the reasons why I was named Shyam; it is one of the many names of Lord Krishna.
Share a fond childhood memory about your Janmashthami celebrationsMy mother indulges in preparations for the whole day, which culminates in a Pooja which is held at night, when she sings bhajans till midnight. Mom also cooks kheer, which is served as prasad. All these are dear memories of the festival. I love watching her decorate the house and settle Lord Krishna in the cradle. As a child I was fascinated with the ritual of swinging the cradle. I am strongly attached to Janmashthami as it connects with my identity of being an actor. My name justifies my emotions attached to this vibrant festival.
One advice for those who don’t indulge in the festivity? It is a very cheerful festival when people enjoy themselves to the fullest. It is a treat to watch Dahi Handis being celebrated at various locations. Janmashthami is a grand family affair, as we celebrate our culture and spread cheer. If you don’t celebrate Janmashthami, then mingle with those who do and enjoy the traditions.
