An artiste’s journey may be slow but if it is a steady one, it’s worth the experience,” says Maulik Chauhan, who has been in showbiz for over a decade. The Bushirt T-Shirt actor adds, “Every artiste has their own journey. Some are successful in their first attempt, while others need to wait longer. One must keep working hard and improving their craft. I feel it’s my time now as an artiste. I am grateful that I am being offered exciting roles.”

‘I never had any qualms about doing small roles’
Maulik, who began his career by playing smaller roles in Wrong Side Raju and Thai Jashe!, says, “When I stepped into the industry, I had no qualms about doing small roles. I took every opportunity as a learning process and focused on bringing the character to life. I always sit with the writer and director to understand their vision.”

He adds, “With increasing number of platforms, artistes are now getting more opportunities. Our industry is coming up with brilliant content and actors whose potential was untapped earlier are getting good opportunities.”

‘Our industry needs a better marketing strategy’

Maulik believes that a movie must create enough buzz before its release. The Maunam actor says, “In the era of content going viral, a movie should attract the audience through its trailer, music, and dialogues. It needs to be talked about before it is released to pull audiences to the theatres.”

He adds, “While we focus on social media and influencer marketing, we should also focus on traditional ways of marketing. Even today, hoardings, posters, word-of-mouth publicity and promotional events play a big role. Today, there are films which are made well, but some of them don’t work at the box office. Either they are not marketed well, or they are released at the wrong time. We need a better marketing strategy.”

Maulik, who will next be seen in Marutinandan, doesn’t believe in sulking when a film doesn’t do well. He says, “I have done good films that didn’t work at the box office. I immediately start analysing what went wrong and how I can improve.”

I love the process of filmmaking. I was an assistant director in two films before I got my break as an actor. I am also learning the process of becoming a producer, and hope to start a production company soon

I want to do some commercial films now, where there are action and dance sequences, something like south films. Not a lot of Gujarati movies are made in that space, but I think the audiences may enjoy them
