Randeria shines again in this comic turn
Comedy, as they say, is a difficult form of art. Effortless comedy requires the actor to be ridiculous, to be vulnerable and yet deeply understand human emotions. Siddharth Randeria is a master at cracking this code!
Rang Rangeela Gujjubhai is the story of a mischievous professor Priyakant Upadhyay (played by Randeria) and his nagging wife Manju (
It is always fun to see Randeria improvise on the stage and also involve the audiences as he goes along. His language and comic timing are very relatable for the audiences and perhaps it is this aspect that makes Randeria so popular with his fans. Even without much substance in the story and without exceptional set design, the play manages to grip the audience throughout. While in the beginning, the play hints at chauvinistic humour and borders on gender stereotypes, its humorous twists compensate for it as the play progresses. The female characters in the play are strong and independent in their approach. Tejal Vyas matches Randeria’s comic timing and is fun to watch. Her role play as the old aunt leaves the audience in splits! The climax sequence brings another level of humour to the already complicated love connections.
While Randeria interacts with the audience in a way that makes them empathise with his situation in spite of the mischiefs of his character, it would have been nice to see even Vyas and other characters involve the audience in a similar way.
Using Gujarati words with Hindi has now become Randeria’s signature! However, the frequent use of certain swear words in moments of exasperation faced by Randeria’s character is noticeable. Perhaps the play would have been interesting even without these words.
By now, a phenomenon of Gujarati comedy, Randeria delivers with Rang Rangeela Gujjubhai flawlessly, yet again. He gives what people love — laughter and that in itself, is an achievement.
