Ranveer Singh’s spy drama Dhurandhar, directed by
Aditya Dhar, has delivered one of the biggest opening weekends of the year but it couldn’t surpass the incredible benchmark set by
Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava which is the biggest Hindi film of 2025. While Dhurandhar roared at both the domestic and overseas box office, Chhaava continues to stand tall as the highest opening-weekend performer of the year on pure three-day numbers.
Chhaava had stunned the industry earlier with its rock-solid weekend trajectory: Rs 31 crore on Day 1, Rs 37 crore on Day 2, and a massive Rs 48.5 crore on Day 3, combining for a powerful Rs 116.5 crore weekend. In comparison Dhurandhar opened to Rs 28 crore on Day 1 followed it up with Rs 32 crore on Day 2 and Rs 43 crore on Day 3 taking the first weekend collection to Rs 103 crore as per Sacnilk.
However, despite strong footfalls and widespread appreciation, Dhurandhar couldn’t crack that number. The film posted a commendable weekend total but still landed below Chhaava’s Rs 116.5 crore benchmark, placing it as the third-biggest weekend opener of the year. The only film ahead of both Chhaava and Dhurandhar remains the juggernaut War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR. That action spectacle rewrote records with a Rs 127 crore Hindi total over its extended 4-day weekend, setting a sky-high bar for the rest of 2025.
While comparisons with Padmaavat were inevitable - given Ranveer Singh’s towering presence in that epic - Dhurandhar also fell short of that film’s weekend figure of Rs 114 crore. It’s worth noting, however, that Padmaavat benefitted from a four-day weekend, plus it also had paid previews, significantly boosting its tally. Dhurandhar had to rely solely on its standard three-day performance, making comparisons interesting but not entirely parallel.
Still, Dhurandhar’s performance is nothing short of impressive. Backed by a stellar cast featuring Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, and Sara Arjun, the film saw a strong surge in national multiplex chains and delivered one of the most consistent day-to-day growth patterns of the season. Overseas, particularly in North America, the film crossed the USD 2 million mark within three days - a region where Ranveer Singh continues to command exceptional fan loyalty.
The real test begins Monday onwards, as word-of-mouth and weekday traction will determine the film’s long-term hold.
