Aamir Khan recalls Salman Khan and Juhi Chawla visiting him after his divorce from Reena Dutta: 'I used to sit alone, I did not meet anyone'
Aamir Khan gets candid about his toughest phase—divorce, depression, and the friends who stood by him.
In a heartfelt interview, the actor opened up about his emotional struggles following his divorce from Reena Dutta. From battling loneliness and turning to alcohol, to finding unexpected support from Juhi Chawla, Salman Khan, and Anil Kapoor, Aamir offered a rare glimpse into his vulnerable side—and how true friendships helped him heal.
In conversation with with The Lallantop, Aamir recalled the day Reena left their home, describing a deep sense of loneliness and restlessness. Struggling to cope, he revealed that he turned to alcohol for the first time that night—and the habit continued for the next one and a half years.
The actor also revealed how loneliness consumed him after Reena left, recalling a particularly dark moment. With no one around and unsure of what to do, he said he opened a bottle of alcohol and finished it entirely. What began as a one-time escape turned into a pattern—he drank every night for the next one and a half years. “I wouldn’t sleep,” he said, “I’d just pass out.”
Aamir further shared a touching moment when Juhi Chawla unexpectedly reached out to him, despite not having spoken for seven years. She called and said she wanted to visit, and Aamir agreed. When she arrived, Juhi told him she had read about his separation from Reena and, without prying into details, urged him to patch things up. Aamir was surprised but moved by her concern, calling the gesture deeply heartfelt.
He went on to praise Ishq co-star Juhi Chawla for her genuine gesture of friendship. Despite not being in touch for seven years, she showed up when he needed support the most—a gesture Aamir deeply valued and remembered as a true mark of friendship.
Aamir also recalled how Salman Khan visited him during that difficult time. He shared that he opened up completely to Salman, pouring his heart out. It was during this emotional exchange that the two actors truly bonded, marking the beginning of their close friendship.
He also shared that during his lowest phase, when he avoided meeting people and often sat alone, Salman Khan paid him a visit just like Juhi had. Salman came over for dinner, and the two ended up having long, heartfelt conversations. Aamir, who was battling depression at the time, said he opened up completely, while Salman offered him comfort and support. It was during this period, around 2001–2002, that their friendship truly began.
Recently seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan also mentioned that Anil Kapoor was among those who visited him after his divorce from Reena Dutta. When asked if Shah Rukh Khan had reached out during that time, Aamir clarified that he hadn’t. “No,” he said, adding that he didn’t interact much with Shah Rukh back then.
