Ali Fazal on Mirzapur: The Movie: I had to detach myself from the entirety of the show

After its run as a streaming series, Mirzapur is now heading to cinemas with Mirzapur: The Movie. As Ali Fazal returns as Guddu Pandit, the adaptation expands the world audiences have followed over the years while taking the character into a new phase.

Opening up about the transition, Ali says, “With Mirzapur: The Movie, we’re not just continuing the story; we’re expanding the world in a much bigger way. The scale, the stakes and the intensity have all grown. Guddu Pandit as a character has changed so much over the years, and this takes him to a space that is far more layered and explosive.”



Shifting from a long-format series to cinema also meant reworking his approach as an actor. Ali admits one of the first adjustments was stepping away from the rhythm of the show and treating the project independently. He says, “The first thing I had to come to terms with was detaching myself from the entirety of the show. I had to look at this as something completely new and fresh. The series stayed with me as a distant memory of a past, a future and a world we had already experienced.”

The change in format also altered the creative process. He notes, “Long-format storytelling spoils us as creators because we get the time to expand worlds and build arcs gradually. Film is the real challenge because stories have to be told more smartly and within a shorter span. Naturally, it means more work for the writers to build entire worlds within less time. I guess it is the same for actors too. We are like sponges; we absorb from the writing, direction and everything around us.”

The move to cinema also altered the demands of portraying Guddu. Ali explains, “Bringing Guddu to the big screen is a completely different experience. The energy required, the emotional depth and even the physicality have to be dialled up because cinema demands a certain magnitude. There is a rawness that fans connected with in the series, but here everything is amplified. It is more immersive, more gripping and definitely more intense. I would like to think my approach changed. The layers are written into it by Puneet Krishna, and I hope I have managed to capture them. Baaki, sab dekhiyega. I honestly do not know how it will finally turn out, so we’ll see.”

Reflecting on Mirzapur making its way to theatres, Ali admits the transition has been both surreal and slightly uncertain because there were no precedents to look towards. He says, “This is the first time something like this is being attempted in India, so there are no real reference points. It is exciting and a little scary at the same time. It has been fascinating to watch this unfold. The idea came up casually in conversations, and before I knew it, things were already in motion. There has been immense love for the show, and it has almost achieved cult status. It is fascinating to explore what that world looks like on the big screen.”
