Allu Arjun to Shah Rukh Khan: Celebs who faced legal action over fan's death

Celebrities often command immense public attention, with fans flocking to events in large numbers to catch a glimpse of their idols. However, in rare cases, tragedy strikes at these gatherings and has resulted in the loss of lives, leading to legal action against those involved, including the celebrity. From South Indian superstar Allu Arjun being arrested over the death of a woman following a stampede that broke out at a theatre, Shah Rukh Khan facing legal issues over a fan's death at a railway station and even international artists like Travis Scott being slapped with 100 lawsuits, these incidents have sparked debates about responsibility, crowd control, and accountability.

Allu Arjun

Telugu actor Allu Arjun, who is riding high on the success of his film 'Pushpa 2: The Rise', hit a major bump in the road when he was arrested on Friday afternoon over the tragic death of a 35-year-old woman in a reported stampede that broke out at his movie's premiere in Hyderabad last weekend. Overwhelming crowds at the Sandhya Theatre led to the woman dying of asphyxiation, while her young son was hospitalised in a critical condition. The police registered an FIR against Arjun, his security team, and the theatre management for negligence. The actor has since approached the Telangana High Court to have the charges dismissed.

Travis Scott

The 2021 Astroworld Festival in Houston, Texas, saw a catastrophic crowd surge that claimed ten lives, including that of a 9-year-old boy. As the event’s headliner, Scott faced lawsuits alleging negligence in event planning and safety protocols. The rapper was slapped with about 100 lawsuits by families of victims and several others who were injured owing to the surge. By May 2024, all lawsuits were settled, including wrongful death claims. The terms of all settlements remained confidential.

4/7

Shah Rukh Khan

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan faced his fair share of legal drama in 2017 when a promotional train journey for 'Raees' ended in tragedy. At Vadodara station, a stampede resulted in the death of a man. Critics accused Khan of inciting chaos, but the Supreme Court eventually quashed the case, ruling that celebrities cannot be held vicariously liable for crowd mismanagement unless direct involvement is proven.

5/7

GloRilla

A GloRilla concert in Rochester, New York, turned fatal in 2023 when false reports of gunshots caused a stampede, killing three attendees who rushed to the exit trying to escape. While at first the star along with security and crowd control at the venue were blamed for the incident, city officials later dismissed the case saying that there was 'no basis for criminal charges'.

6/7

Randy Blythe

In 2010, a fan at a Lamb of God concert in Prague sustained fatal head injuries after being pushed offstage. Randy Blythe, the band’s lead vocalist, was charged with manslaughter but was acquitted in 2013. The court acknowledged Blythe’s moral responsibility but found no criminal negligence.

7/7

Judas Priest

In 1990, heavy metal band Judas Priest faced a civil lawsuit over claims that subliminal messages in their song 'Better by You, Better than Me' triggered two fans’ suicide attempts in 1985. A 20 years old, survived a self-inflicted gunshot wound but died three years later with a severely disfigured face. His 18 years old friend also died instantly after placing a shotgun under his chin and firing it. Reports state that the boys' parents claimed that the song triggered their suicides. However, the court ultimately ruled in favour of the band. The case later ignited debates on artistic freedom and its societal impact.
