Amid NCB’s cruise drug bust case involving Aryan Khan, here’s a re-look at Rhea Chakraborty’s case

After ruling the headlines for the major part of the year in 2020, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has been hitting the headlines of late after they raided an alleged rave party on a Goa-bound cruise in Mumbai and arrested Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan along with others. While we wait for Aryan’s bail hearing in Mumbai’s Sessions court today, we take a re-look at Rhea Chakraborty’s drug case, following Sushant Singh Rajput’s case and where it stands today!

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), who had extensively questioned Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Showik Chakraborty following Sushant Singh Rajput’s case, had stated in their charge sheet that the actress was a part of a big drug syndicate. It was alleged that Rhea, along with her brother, would provide drugs to Sushant.

The actress was reportedly charged with Sections under the NDPS Act for allegedly dealing with drug peddlers, buying drugs from them in commercial quantity and encouraging others to consume drugs. However, during this entire investigation, the NCB did not recover any drugs from Rhea.

After Sushant Singh Rajput’s demise, his father had filed a complaint against Rhea Chakraborty, accusing her of siphoning funds from his account. Owing to the same, she was initially questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). However, the drugs angle came to the fore following Sushant's post-mortem. The actress was reportedly mentioned in the statements of the late actor's househelp and other friends. Rhea was then summoned by the NCB for questioning. The central agency had claimed that Rhea, in her statement, confessed to buying drugs for Sushant and handling the finances for him. She was arrested was sent to Byculla jail for almost a month.

Rhea Chakraborty, through her lawyer Satish Maneshinde, had filed a bail application in the Bombay High Court. Her lawyer had argued that she was wrongly accused and arrested. He went on to add that no banned substances were recovered from the actress. Maneshinde also reportedly argued that his client was arrested without any notice and still she has been cooperating with the agency and appearing for interrogations. According to the law, this is a violation of her fundamental rights. The Bombay High Court granted bail to Rhea on October 7, 2020.

Earlier this year in March, the NCB had reportedly approached Supreme Court against the observations of the Bombay High Court regarding Rhea Chakraborty’s bail. However, the Supreme Court had noted that the bail petition cannot be challenged based on mere observation. So far, there has been no big development in the case.
