Anurag Kashyap takes a dig at people of 'India' over Payal Kapadia’s Cannes 2024 victory; 'Just like to take credit’

Filmmaker Payal Kapadia scripted history after her film 'All We Imagine As Light' won the prestigious Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes film festival. However, Anurag Kashyap believes that everybody in India just likes to take credit and is a part of a fake celebration.

During a conversation with PTI, Anurag Kashyap shared that Payal Kapadia's victory is often portrayed as a collective triumph for India, but in reality, it is not, as such films receive little to no support from anyone.

Kashyap also noted that 'All We Imagine as Light' was funded by a French company and was an Indo-French co-production between Petit Chaos from France and Chalk and Cheese Films from India. Indian-British filmmaker Sandhya Suri’s 'Santosh' and Karan Kandhari’s 'Sister Midnight' were funded by the UK, while Konstantin Bojanov’s 'The Shameless' was almost entirely self-funded. Chidananda’s short film was produced as part of the TV Wing’s one-year program under FTII.

Kashyap criticized India for taking credit for films they do not support, noting that these films often don't even get a cinema release. He called for an end to the fake celebrations, pointing out that even if these films are released, no one goes to watch them in theaters.

For those unaware, at this year’s Cannes Festival, three Indians had won big. While Kapadia became the first Indian director to win the Grand Prix, actor Anasuya Sengupta was awarded Best Actress in the Un Certain Regard strand for 'The Shameless'.
