Bangalore to witness Monsoon Wedding

NEW DELHI: Mira Nair's film Monsoon Wedding, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival recently, will be screened at the International Film Festival of India being held in Bangalore next month. This will be the film's first screening in India. Its commercial release has been slated for February next year.

however, it is yet to be decided whether it would figure as part of the world cinema or the nri section of the festival, the sources said adding, the film had been invited long before it received the top honours at venice. mira nair's vision of an elaborate and colourful wedding in punjab may also be the closing film of the festival, but the sources said that no final decision had been taken so far. the film, a favourite at the cannes film festival and venice, was shot in a month using hand-held cameras and mira calls it "nothing but a testament to life." mira, the first woman director to win in 58 festivals in venice, hogged the limelight with oscar-nominated salaam bombay in 1988 for which she had actually picked up slum children from the city to act in the film. her mississippi masala and the controversial kamasutra: a tale of love also won her international acclaim.
