Bappi Lahiri left for his heavenly abode on February 15, 2022, at 11:45 pm. The legend's last rites were carried out this afternoon.

ETimes

had a chat with the Senior Pulmonologist Dr

Deepak Namjoshi

, who had been treating

Bappi da

since quite some time.

Excerpts:

Can Bappi da's demise be attributed to post-COVID complications?
No, Bappi da had health issues for a long time. Yes, he was infected with

COVID

in April 2021 but what happened now cannot be called a post-COVID complication. It was due to his

OSA #

(

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

) and current chest infection which had set in due to his obesity. Many obese people tend to have OSA.

Bappi da's voice had changed...
Yes, that's because he was on a bypass machine for his night breathing. When one is on a bypass machine, it causes dryness of the throat which can affect the voice.

His son Bappa has come down from the US...
Yes, in fact he was here in the hospital during Bappi da's previous hospitalisation which had happened 2 to 3 months ago. Bappi da was admitted 3 to 4 times in the past one year. This time, he was admitted for 29 days and of those, he was about 15 days in the ICU. He had been quite sick for some time and in such cases, we keep seeing such outcomes.

Did he have any heart/liver/kidney problems?
Nothing big. But in OSA, any organ can crash without warning and especially the heart. Chemical changes happen in the body which in turn can make the carbon dioxide levels go up and the pH of blood can change.

Was it a case of the heart crashing in the end?
We wouldn't be able to say that because we had very little time to revive him. But that seems to be the likely reason. He was very critical when he was brought in by ambulance. We did try to revive him in the hospital but... Whatever happened is very sad.

Bappi da was a very cheerful man, wasn't he?
Yes. Bappi da used to sing for me and tell me many stories. He had said that he was going to sing my favourite song 'Mumbai se aaya mera dost' of

'Aap Ki Khatir'

for me, when he would be fully alright, going through the speech therapy.

What is OSA? Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a disorder caused by the repetitive collapse of the upper airway during sleep. It is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder. OSA occurs when the muscles supporting the soft tissues in your throat, such as your tongue and soft palate, relax.
Remembering Bappi Lahiri: The reason behind Bappi da's love for gold

Veteran singer and composer Bappi Lahiri, who passed away at 69 today has left an indelible mark in Bollywood and fashion. He was a true legend and made his own style statement. Here's why he was called the Gold Man of India.

Bappi da had revealed his love for gold in several interviews and told that he was inspired by Elvis Presley and wanted to create his own identity through his own unique way.

Speaking more about his love for gold he had said, "When my first film Zakhmee was a success, my mother gave it to me and since then gold has been very lucky for me as every song was a hit after this. I was also really fascinated with the way Elvis Presley has his own identity and I too decided to have my own, and here I am today."

In the 2014 election affidavit, it was mentioned that Bappi da owned 754 grams of gold and 4.6 kg silver. It was some 8 years ago.

The price of all the gold that he wore would come around INR 36 lakhs.

Bappi Lahiri also started wearing metal Luminex Uno in his later years.

I have never endorsed any brand, but this time, I am definitely endorsing this new age metal. I am also composing a new song for luminex uno, which you can get to hear this Diwali."

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Bappi Lahiri made sure that his face mask also made a style statement.

His son Bappa had also mentioned in a interview that he used to wear sunglasses in the night while going for parties.

He had further said, "As a child, I would think why were my friends talking about him, his clothes. Today, when I look back, he has made his mark. I see a lot of people dress up like him; many sport gold chains and sunglasses. I always knew my father was someone special and I’m really proud of him."
