Bhumi Pednekar reflects on failure of ‘The Lady Killer’: ‘It was a very heartbreaking time in my life’

Bhumi Pednekar has finally spoken about the turmoil surrounding ‘The Lady Killer’, widely labelled one of the biggest commercial failures in Indian cinema. The actor admitted that the version audiences saw in theatres was drastically different from the film she had originally committed to. The experience, she said, left her emotionally shaken and professionally uncertain. For Bhumi, the fallout was not just about numbers but about a project that never reached its intended form.

Reflecting on the troubled production during a chat with Mid-Day, Bhumi revealed that a significant portion of the script was never shot. She described the ordeal as one of the most distressing phases of her career, explaining how the final product bore little resemblance to the complete narrative the team had envisioned.




Pednekar said, “The script that we read was complete, but a large part of it was never filmed. What released was an incomplete film. I wish I had known better maybe if I was a part of the system, I could have manoeuvred things differently. I was in shock. I kept wondering what was happening because nothing like this had ever happened before. Eventually, I told myself this was a learning.”

According to the actor, nearly 35 percent of the film remained unshot, yet the makers chose to release it. This decision left her grappling with confusion and disappointment, unsure of how to move forward. The emotional toll, she admitted, was profound.

Bhumi shared, “It was a very heartbreaking time in my life. I felt finished. I didn’t know how to recover from it… It’s still a khichdi in my head who was responsible. I keep wondering whether I contributed to it or someone else did. But it was a decision the makers took at that time, which they felt was right. It was also a time when the industry had not fully recovered from the pandemic. It was just a mess.”

Directed by Ajay Bahl, ‘The Lady Killer’ also starred Arjun Kapoor. The film opened with extremely limited screenings across select metro cities and struggled to draw audiences. Mounted on a reported budget of Rs 45 crore, it earned only about Rs 60,000 on day one and wrapped up its theatrical run in under a week with collections below Rs 1 lakh. With no OTT buyers stepping forward, the film was eventually made available on YouTube for free viewing.

In the aftermath, the director acknowledged the film’s unfinished state in an online comment, writing that “it's no surprise that the film feels choppy and disjointed and one finds it hard to connect with the characters,” though he later retracted the statement, saying it had been misinterpreted.
