Producer Bobby Bedi and music composer AR Rahman have reunited after 19 years to collaborate on an international film based on Mullah Naseeruddin, a character prominent in the folklore of the Eastern world from the Balkans to China. Their last project together was "Mangal Pandey" in 2005, starring Aamir Khan.

Speaking about the new film with ETimes, producer Bobby Bedi said, "So far, the only Asian stories that have been internationally successful are the ones produced in the West. Gandhi, Lawrence of Arabia, The Jungle Book... With this film, Rahman and I want to tell a story of the East—by the East, but for the world. In a form that is unapologetically eastern."

Rahman and Bobby Bedi met at the Cannes Film Festival when they decided to announce the film. Speaking about the film on Mullah Naseerusddin, he said, "

Growing up as a child, I grew up with the wisdom of Mullah Naseeruddin. With this film, we are hoping to share his enigma and the essence of his being. I am delighted to be partnering with Bobby Bedi and Technicolor to make this film a reality. We are looking forward to producing this musical and mystical film."
