Bobby Deol reveals he wanted to name his first son Dharam after his father Dharmendra: 'I just wanted to have a daughter, name her...'
Bobby Deol who is winning hearts at the moment with his role in 'The Ba***ds Of Bollywood'. The actor is currently in his 2.0 version and second phase of his career after experiencing a dull time. He is back and how - with projects like 'Aashram', 'Animal', and now this Aryan Khan directed series amidst more. While he may look like a tough guy on screen, clearly, Bobby Deol is quite vulnerable. That side of him is evident when he speaks about his family. In a recent interview, Bobby has opened up on his parents, his siblings and revealed he wanted a daughter and wanted to give her his mother's name.
He revealed on Raj Shamani's podcast, “When I got married, I wanted to have four kids… and I wanted to name them exactly the same names as my siblings because we have very unisex pet names. My brother is Sunny—you could be a boy or a girl. My eldest sister is Laali; she could be a boy or a girl. Then Anu and Bobby. All unisex names.”
Reflecting on his younger self, Bobby laughed, “That was when I was growing up. I used to think of these things. Then when my wife and me were having our first child, I only looked for girl names.” He admitted that he had always wanted a daughter, inspired by the bond his sisters shared with their parents.
The actor fondly recalled, “I just wanted to have a daughter. If I go a little back… my second sister, who is two years older than me, she got married and before that she said, ‘If I have a daughter, I’ll name her Nicky.’ That’s my mom… So I said, ‘No, I’m going to name my daughter Nicky.’”
This playful disagreement with his sister Anu turned emotional, but eventually, she did go on to name her daughter Nicky—someone Bobby now considers especially dear. Later, when he and his wife were expecting their first child, Nicky teased him for not sticking to his claim. Bobby joked that if he couldn’t have a daughter of his own, he would adopt her.
Recalling the birth of his first son, Bobby shared, “I had my first son, and it was the day after Gadar released. It was a huge moment for me and my brother, around 24 years back. There was just so much happiness in the house… The day my son was born, I felt this connection to another level.”
When it came to naming his children, Bobby admitted he had initially wanted to call one of them Dharam, after his legendary father, Dharmendra. He explained, “It just had this beautiful emotion, sound, love—it just sounded that way. They said to me, ‘You can’t. You have to name him something else.’ I said, ‘Who calls papa by his name?’ Then I found another name.”
Eventually, Bobby named his firstborn Aryaman. His second son, however, did carry forward the legacy, he was named Dharam. With a smile, Bobby added that Dharam inherited the same warmth and affection that defines his grandfather.
