Bollywood's most memorable on-screen Diwali moments: ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' to ‘Taare Zameen Par

Diwali in Bollywood is more than just a backdrop; it's a character in itself. The festival of lights has been used by filmmakers for decades to signify joy, homecoming, the victory of good over evil, and pivotal turning points in the story. From grand family reunions to moments of quiet reflection, these iconic scenes are etched in cinematic history and have become synonymous with the festival for millions.

2/6

‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (2001): The grandest homecoming

This is, without a doubt, the most iconic Diwali celebration scene in modern cinema. The scene is a masterclass in Karan Johar's signature melodrama and grandeur. Jaya Bachchan, as Nandini Raichand, senses her son Rahul's (Shah Rukh Khan) return, holding the puja thali with unwavering faith. The grand helicopter entrance, the slow-motion reunion, and the soulful title track create a moment of pure, unadulterated cinematic joy. It perfectly encapsulates Diwali's core theme of family and homecoming. It set the gold standard for on-screen festivals. The scene is so powerful that for many, the image of Jaya Bachchan with her aarti thali is the definitive cinematic representation of a mother's love during Diwali.

‘Mohabbatein’ (2000): The celebration of defiant love

Diwali in ‘Mohabbatein’ is a symbol of light and love, pushing back against darkness and fear. The song ‘Pairon Mein Bandhan Hai’ is set during a beautifully lit Diwali night where the students of the rigid Gurukul, encouraged by their music teacher Raj (Shah Rukh Khan), defy the principal's strict rules. They invite girls from the neighbouring school to celebrate with them, lighting diyas that represent hope and rebellion. The festival is used as a pivotal plot device. It marks the first major crack in Principal Narayan Shankar's authoritarian facade and beautifully visualizes the film's central theme: love will always find a way.

‘Aamdani Atthanni Kharcha Rupaiya’ (2001): The definitive diwali anthem

This film gave us the ultimate, on-the-nose Diwali celebration song: ‘Aayi Hai Diwali Suno Ji Gharwali.’ Featuring an ensemble cast including Govinda and Juhi Chawla, the song is a fun, high-energy dance number that captures the chaotic and joyous spirit of a middle-class family celebration. It’s all about the fun, the food, and the festive cheer. It's pure, unadulterated fun. The song has become a staple on Diwali party playlists across the country for its infectious rhythm and simple, celebratory message.

5/6

‘Vaastav: The Reality’ (1999): The stark contrast

A far cry from the usual festive fanfare, the Diwali scene in ‘Vaastav: The Reality’ is raw and heartbreaking. It shows gangster Raghu’s tense annual visit home, where he boasts to his horrified mother about his ‘pachaas tola’ gold chain. This moment of dark pride tragically foreshadows the film’s climax, where a broken Raghu begs that very mother to grant him ‘mukti’ (liberation) by shooting him. The scene powerfully uses the festival of light to underscore the inescapable darkness of his tragic life.

6/6

‘Taare Zameen Par’ (2007): The festival of loneliness

In a poignant counter-narrative, Diwali is used to highlight profound sadness. When young Ishaan is sent to a boarding school, he feels utterly alone and abandoned. Aamir Khan masterfully contrasts Ishaan's isolation with vibrant, colourful scenes of his family and neighbourhood celebrating a joyous Diwali back home. The fireworks and laughter he's missing serve to deepen the audience's empathy for his plight. It’s a powerful and realistic depiction of how festive occasions can amplify feelings of loneliness and separation, making it one of the most emotionally resonant uses of the festival in film.
