Can ‘Freedom at Midnight 2’ carve its own space amid ‘Dhurandhar’ and ‘Ikkis’? Director Nikkhil Advani opens up

Following the remarkable response to its first season, ‘Freedom at Midnight’ has officially been renewed for a second chapter. ‘Freedom at Midnight 2’ is scheduled to premiere on January 9, 2026, on SonyLIV. Ahead of the release, director Nikkhil Advani addressed the timing of the show, especially with ‘Dhurandhar’ and ‘Ikkis’ also arriving around the same period. In a recent interview with NDTV, Advani admitted that this overlap was never part of the original plan, saying, "It's not something we planned when we started four years ago." While ‘Dhurandhar’ and ‘Ikkis’ reportedly centre on India-Pakistan tensions, ‘Freedom at Midnight 2’ dives into the harrowing story of the Partition, cross-border violence, and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Nikkhil Advani clarified that he was unaware the two projects would be released alongside his series. Advani stated, "I didn't know Dhurandhar and Ikkis were going to release the same time around as Freedom At Midnight 2. It's not something we planned when we started four years ago... I haven't seen Dhurandhar and I want to see Ikkis."For Advani, the strength of ‘Freedom at Midnight’ lies in its ability to transport viewers into a different era altogether. He emphasised that immersing the audience in the world of the series was crucial, adding that anything less would result in a complete failure. According to him, every element—from performances and dialogue to the visual treatment and narrative flow—had to work in unison to make the audience forget the present and live in the past.Advani explained, "For me, it is about how I take the audience who's watching this show and the story that I'm telling into that time where a lot of these people who we revered as demigods and gods, were confused and lost. They were dealing with problems they had never imagined. The amount of violence that was happening on both the sides of the border was incredible."Advani also revealed that releasing the second season in 2026 was not his first choice. He shared that streaming platforms often recommend spacing out seasons of successful shows so audiences continue revisiting earlier episodes. Personally, he said he would have preferred a date in 2025 that carried patriotic significance.Nikhil Advani noted that he would have been content if the show had premiered on August 15, 2025, October 2, 2025, or any other date linked with national sentiment. Explaining the final call, he said, "We were ready to finish the post-production. But I think the decision to bring it on January 9 is a question you need to ask Danish Khan and Saugata Mukherjee (at Sony LIV)." ‘Freedom at Midnight’ Season 2 continues its historical narrative by exploring the tumultuous months that followed India’s independence in 1947.
