Celebrity moms and their comebacks: A Mother's Day tribute to the grit behind the glamour
Operation Sindoor
This Mother’s Day, we turn the spotlight away from red carpets and onto the real redemptions — the raw, relentless return to self that so many star moms navigate with silent strength. Let’s look at the glow not just as glam, but as grit and honor the sweat behind the sequins, the stretch behind the smiles, and the silent triumph behind every return.
Behind the Glow: The Real Comebacks of Star Moms
Bollywood’s most beloved faces — Malaika Arora, Shilpa Shetty, Sonali Bendre, Alia Bhatt, Sonam Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, and now Esha Deol — have all lived through transformations far deeper than the physical.
These women didn’t just “bounce back.” They broke, rebuilt, and reclaimed their womanhood — and their careers — while cradling new life in their arms and carrying unseen emotional weight in their hearts.
Shilpa Shetty, long before she became a wellness icon, opened up about her battles with body image and societal expectations post-childbirth. Her message today is holistic — fitness is not a punishment, it’s a celebration of vitality.
Sonali Bendre’s story goes beyond motherhood. After surviving cancer, her journey back was as much spiritual as physical. She doesn’t just return to the screen — she returns with scars worn proudly, voice strengthened, and spirit undeterred. In many ways, she has become the face of resilience itself.
Alia Bhatt, representing a newer generation, embraced her postpartum journey publicly, reminding young mothers everywhere that there’s no ‘right’ way to return. “Childbirth is a miracle,” she wrote. “The least we can do is give our bodies the same love they gave us.”
And Sonam Kapoor, never one to sugarcoat, echoed that sentiment with striking honesty: “It’s taken me 16 months to feel like myself again.” No crash diets. No glam illusions. Just a woman honoring the pace of her healing.
After giving birth to her son Taimur in December 2016, Kareena Kapoor Khan embarked on a transformative fitness journey, shedding 32 kg over 19 months. Collaborating with celebrity trainer Namrata Purohit and nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, Kareena began with gentle exercises, performing just eight repetitions due to a weak back post-delivery. Gradually, she progressed to high-intensity workouts, including 20–30 repetitions per set, showcasing her dedication and resilience.
During her pregnancy, Kareena indulged in her cravings, enjoying foods like pizza, pasta, samosas, and motichur laddoos. Postpartum, she shifted to a disciplined diet comprising doodhi sabzi, karela sabzi, one roti, a bowl of rice, and soup. Emphasizing the importance of a balanced approach, Kareena's journey underscores that sustainable weight loss is achievable through consistent effort and self-belief.
In an interview with Mid-Day, Kareena shared, "Not only had I had a child, it had also been 10 years since Tashan released. Namrata made me repeat that journey even though I had aged. I had childbearing hips and gained a lot of weight. But she merely asked me to believe in her. She was set to change my body,” Kareena says, adding, “We started our journey with me executing a mere eight repetitions in each exercise, because I had a weak back post delivery. Today, Namrata and I trained together and executed a high-intensity class that involved 20-30 reps, one after another.”
The Mental Marathon:
In perhaps one of the most courageous admissions in recent times, Esha Deol stepped forward with her story of postpartum depression (PPD). After giving birth to her second daughter, Miraya, Esha found herself surrounded by loved ones but overcome by an inexplicable sadness.“I didn’t feel this after my first baby,” she recalled. “Suddenly I felt low, dull... I wanted to cry.”
Her story is a powerful reminder that healing often begins at home — and sometimes, a mother’s embrace is the first step to rediscovering yourself.
In a candid conversation with Humans of Bombay, actor Mandira Bedi opened up about her experience with postpartum depression, challenging the romanticised narrative around pregnancy and childbirth. She revealed that when she first saw her son, she didn’t feel an instant connection. “It was not love at first sight... I had to give up my independence, and that was overwhelming,” she said. Mandira shared that she wasn’t prepared for the emotional upheaval and cried often after returning home. “Nobody told me about postpartum depression. My hormones were all over the place,” she added. Her husband’s unwavering support helped her through the tough period.
Motherhood: A Constant Balancing Act
For many of these women, the challenge isn’t just internal — it’s logistical. How do you manage night feeds and media shoots, toddler tantrums and Pilates sessions? Esha admits this is a new phase: “Radhya still wants me all the time. I can’t always be with Miraya to breastfeed, so I express milk. When there’s a provision, why not use it?” This simple line carries immense weight — it speaks to the flexibility, guilt, and practical creativity every mother must embrace. Celebrity moms in the West mirror this reality. Beyoncé’s Homecoming documented her struggles post-emergency C-section. Blake Lively spoke of shedding 60 pounds not for the camera, but for her own sense of self. These women, across time zones and industries, remind us: strength doesn’t mean silence.Check out our list of the latest Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada movies.
