Daboo Malik on Amaal’s Bigg Boss 19 entry, family rift and Armaan’s reaction: ‘He wants to be a star'
Music composer Amaal Mallik’s entry into the Bigg Boss 19 house has stirred buzz, not only because of his hit tracks like Kar Gayi Chull, Chale Aana and O Khuda, but also due to his emotional Instagram post earlier this year where he declared cutting ties with his family. Now, his father, veteran composer Daboo Malik, has spoken about what triggered that moment.
Daboo revealed that the issue was never about professional setbacks. “What happened is that in our generation, the face of the Malik family was Anu Malik. I also had my times of depression, criticism, but I never went public with it. Each to his own,” he said in an interview with NDTV.
According to him, Amaal struggled with the fact that while his younger brother Armaan became a popular face, his own identity as a composer remained in the shadows. “Being the elder who created this ecosystem, Amaal with his great music was not becoming the face. Suddenly one becomes a star like Armaan. A singer becomes more popular than a composer,” he explained.
While Amaal’s compositions have earned praise, Daboo believes the lack of mainstream recognition weighed heavily on him. “The feeling of not having an identity was a setback. In his heart, Amaal wants to be a star. I hope this journey on a national platform will fulfil his dreams,” he said.
For Daboo, Bigg Boss 19 is more than just a reality show—it’s a chance for Amaal to claim his spotlight. “Bigg Boss will give him that popularity, the face value, the identity that ‘Here he is – the man who created the music’.”
Daboo clarified that Amaal’s social media outburst wasn’t an overnight decision. “It was over a period of time. At a spark of a moment, he felt like, ‘I need to tell the world what I am going through’. So he posted on social media that he didn’t want to do anything with the family. It was a cumulative effect of so many things,” he shared, adding that his son later deleted the post.
Despite the setback, Daboo maintained that the family’s love for Amaal has never wavered. “At the bottom of it, he cannot deny the amount of love he has from his family. It’s very disheartening that after all the care and love we had for him, suddenly this outburst came.”
The emotional moment also brought the Malik brothers closer. Daboo recalled that Armaan immediately took charge. “He just said, ‘Mom, Dad, keep away. I’m going to fly and take this up’. He was very supportive. He loves his brother.”
For Daboo, the episode has been a reminder about modern parenting. “Do not take any signs that seem out of normalcy lightly. Always remember, we are parents, but we are not always right,” he admitted. He also stressed the need to adapt to the changing mindset of today’s youth.
