Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge has landed in fresh controversy even as it continues its dream run at the box office. An urgent plea has reportedly been made before the
Madras High Court seeking a ban on the film’s release in Tamil Nadu, citing concerns over the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The petitioner argued that the film’s overt political themes and references to sensitive real-world events could unduly influence voters, prompting the court to direct a formal writ petition while the high-octane spy thriller simultaneously races toward the historic Rs. 1,000 crore milestone in global ticket sales.
Plea cites political content, election timing
According to Live Law, an advocate made an oral mention before Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan, arguing that the film deals with political themes and should not be screened during the election period.
With Tamil Nadu set to go to the polls in a month, the timing of the film’s release has become a point of contention.
However, the bench directed the petitioner to file a formal writ petition and then seek an urgent hearing. A decision on whether the release will be halted is likely only after the court takes up the plea.
Box office storm continues
Amid the legal buzz, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, starring Ranveer Singh, is rewriting box office records. The spy thriller has emerged as the second Indian film after Pushpa 2 to post a massive opening weekend, raking in Rs 761 crore globally within four days of its release.
Backed by Jio Studios and B62 Studios, the film has set new benchmarks across territories. While Pushpa 2 leads with Rs 795.50 crore in its first four days, Dhurandhar has surpassed big-ticket films like Baahubali 2, RRR, and KGF 2 in opening weekend performance.
Record-breaking numbers
The film collected Rs 145 crore (nett) in India through paid previews and opening day, along with Rs 52 crore overseas — becoming the first Indian film to cross the Rs 100 crore mark in a single day in one language.
On day two, it earned Rs 83 crore (nett) in India and Rs 46 crore overseas. Collections surged over the weekend, with Rs 117 crore (nett) in India and Rs 58 crore globally on Saturday, followed by Rs 121 crore (nett) in India and Rs 56 crore globally on Sunday.
This took the total to Rs 761 crore worldwide, including Rs 550 crore gross in India and Rs 211 crore from international markets.
A sequel to Dhar’s 2025 film, Dhurandhar: The Revenge released on March 19 across Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. The film also stars R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Sara Arjun, and Rakesh Bedi.
Set in Lyari, Karachi — a region known for its history of gang wars and turf battles — the film revolves around covert intelligence operations against the backdrop of major geopolitical events such as the Kandahar hijack, the 2001 Parliament attack, and the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
The sequel traces the rise of Ranveer Singh’s Hamza Ali Mazari in the Karachi underworld, while also exploring his origins as Jaskirat Singh Rangi, charting his transformation into a covert operative.Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the
