Did you know Gopala Gopala is a Telugu remake of Akshay Kumar's OMG? Here are South Indian movies you didn't know were remakes of Bollywood films

South Indian films have frequently borrowed ideas from Bollywood, leading to a number of hit remakes that many audiences may be unaware are adaptations. Not only do these remakes localize the locale and characters, but even introduce a new flavor while keeping the core of the original tale intact. What follows are some South films you didn't know were remakes of Bollywood blockbusters.

2/6

‘Gopala Gopala’ (Telugu)

The Telugu version of the satirical Bollywood hit ‘Oh My God!’ is titled ‘Gopala Gopala.’ The plot is about Gopala Rao (Venkatesh), an atheist businessman whose store is reduced to rubble in an earthquake. When his insurance claim is rejected on religious grounds, he sues God, and a courtroom drama with a dash of humor and social commentary ensues. Pawan Kalyan essays a modern-day Krishna who guides Gopala. The original had Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar, and the remake keeps the same message but with a regional flavor.

3/6

‘Kanden Kadhalai’ (Tamil)

‘Kanden Kadhalai’ is a Tamil remake of ‘Jab We Met,’ the Bollywood film. Shakthi (Bharath Srinivasan), a muddle-headed businessman, meets the lively Anjali (Tamannaah Bhatia) while traveling by train after a series of personal losses. With Anjali, Shakthi finds happiness and purpose in life again, while Anjali too battles with romance. The movie reflects the original's charm, with Bharath and Tamannaah taking over the roles popularized by Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.

4/6

‘Aha Kalyanam’ (Tamil)

‘Aha Kalyanam’ is the Tamil version of the popular Bollywood movie ‘Band Baaja Baaraat.’ The story revolves around two ambitious young people who form a wedding planning business together. As their business partnership increases, so do their personal emotions, causing complications and misunderstandings. Starring Nani and Vaani Kapoor in the starring roles, imitating the Ranveer Singh-Anushka Sharma chemistry from the original, the film incorporates romance, comedy, and drama amidst the rich wedding industry background.

5/6

‘Shankar Dada Zindabad’ (Telugu)

This is a Telugu remake of ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai.’ Shankar Dada (Chiranjeevi) is an affable hoodlum who falls for a radio jockey and impersonates a Gandhian to win her over. Advised by fantasy dialogues with Mahatma Gandhi, he goes on a path of self-realization and social change. The film retains the humor and heart of the original with Chiranjeevi filling in for the role played by Sanjay Dutt, aided by a cast that also features Karishma Kotak and Srikanth.

6/6

‘Nanban’ (Tamil)

‘Nanban’ is a Tamil remake of the Bollywood hit ‘3 Idiots.’ The film is about three engineering students - Pari (Vijay), Venkat (Jiiva), and Senthil (Srikanth)-going through academic pressure, friendship, and the chase for real passion. Their ride is filled with pranks, life lessons, and a mission to find their lost friend. Directed by Shankar, it features Vijay, Jiiva, Srikanth, Ileana D'Cruz, and Sathyaraj, capturing the original Aamir Khan-starrer's camaraderie and emotional depth.
