Johnny Walker Was Not His Real Name
Born as Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi in Indore in 1926, he later adopted the screen name Johnny Walker — inspired by the famous Scotch whisky brand. The name was given to him by Guru Dutt, who was so impressed by Kazi’s impersonation of a drunk man that he cast him in Baazi (1951) and gave him this memorable screen identity.
He Worked as a Bus Conductor Before Entering Films
Before stardom, Johnny Walker worked as a BEST bus conductor in Mumbai, known for entertaining passengers with jokes and mimicry. His natural comic timing and unique style caught the attention of industry insiders, eventually leading to his big break in Bollywood.
He Redefined Comedy in Indian Cinema
Unlike slapstick-heavy roles of the time, Johnny Walker’s comedy was nuanced, character-driven, and often socially relevant. He brought warmth and humanity to comic roles, making them more than just filler in films. His performances were often clean, never vulgar, and appealed to family audiences.

Johnny Walker became a staple in Guru Dutt’s films, appearing in classics like Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Their creative partnership is still regarded as one of the finest actor-director collaborations in Hindi cinema.
He Gradually Withdrew from Films on His Own Terms
Disillusioned with the changing tone of comedy in films — which he felt had become crass — Johnny Walker chose to step away from the limelight in the 1980s. He made very selective appearances after that, preferring to leave behind a legacy of dignity and timeless humour.
