All of us Bollywood geeks have a string of movies that are always too close to our hearts and which sometimes take us back to our childhood memories in seconds. These movies might be funny, dramatic or filled with romance but end up making it to our list of unforgettable, all-time favourite watches. It’s been twenty years since 2000, and although it’s been a long time since these films were played on the big screens, it seems like yesterday when the heroes from these films were a rage.
Undoubtedly, they had some of the most iconic characters, hilarious scenes, dialogues and actors to make them shine out of the lot till date. We have to agree the year 2000 gave us some gems including Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Mohabbatein’ and Hrithik Roshan-Karisma Kapoor’s ‘Fiza’. Let’s take a look at other films that belong to the year 2000 and which turned 20 in 2020.
Mohabbatein
This romance drama will always be our favourite. Released in October of 2000, this movie revolves around students who come to study in a school named Gurukul, and end up falling in love. They face patriarchal beliefs and obstacles which make them question love as a concept in totality. Starring Amitabh Bachan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai in the lead, this movie shows how love can conquer anything. ‘Mohabbatein’ became the longest running Chopra film in history.
Mission Kashmir
2000 also turned out to be the year for many patriotic films. Also, movies based on terrorism won hearts across the nation and worked best in cinema halls. ‘Mission Kashmir’ was one such film. This action-war was not just emotional but a tale of vengeance as well. Hritik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt played exceptional characters with the beautiful Preity Zinta playing Hrithik’s childhood lover. With the direction and production of Vidhu Vinod Chopra, this intense plot won hearts.
Hera Pheri
‘Hera Pheri’ is a series of Indian comedy films that is one of the all-time-favourites on many. The first film was directed by Priyadarshan and produced by A.G. Nadiadwala. With an exceptionally well-picked cast, including Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal, this movie has by far been the most recognised and loved movies of all times. A cult classic, this movie is sure to make you laugh throughout. With phenomenal script and a growing plot, ‘Hera Pheri’ is a must-watch.
Refugee
This movie was another well-recognised one, especially for the music given by Anu Malik and the pure, melodic and romantic song lyrics written by Javed Akhtar. A classic romance between Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor Khan was indeed the best debut both the actors could have made. This movie bagged a lot of awards and was a good take off for both the debutants in the industry.
Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai
There has hardly been a better debut for a youngster than this movie. This mega blockbuster earned Hrithik Roshan the Filmfare Award for Best Debut and the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Considered to be the best movie of the year 2000, it also had a good script, great songs and not to forget, Hrithik's dance moves. ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’ was a Hindi-language musical romantic thriller, written and directed by Rakesh Roshan, and the songs in this movie have been making fans groove till date.
Jungle
To the surprise of audiences, this film was a hit too. Fardeen Khan was a delight to watch as the lead hero opposite Urmila Matondkar. However, what took the cake was the fact that Ram Gopal Varma had pulled out all the stops to ensure that this movie did well. Critics called it an 'edge of the seat' thriller which was said to have been based on the life of the infamous bandit, Veerappan.
Fiza
This was another Hrithik Roshan flick with Jaya Bachchan and Karishma Kapoor by his side. All three were impressive in their roles. The plot where a young boy turns terrorist, a depressed mother and a sister who goes on a searching spree for him made for a gripping tale. This brilliantly written script brought to life a great watch.
