From ‘Sardar’ to ‘Ajey’: Bollywood films that tell the story of political leaders

Filmmakers in Bollywood frequently turn real-life politicians into the subjects of powerful biopics that blend historical accuracy, artistic flair, and dramatic storytelling. These films explore the lives, deaths, and legacies of prominent figures in Indian politics, including prime ministers, freedom fighters, and other influential leaders. While some have been praised for their authenticity, others stirred controversy for their portrayals. Here’s a closer look at the major movies.

2/6

'Sardar'

In 'Sardar' (1993), directed by Ketan Mehta and starring Paresh Rawal, Annu Kapoor, Benjamin Gilani, and Tom Alter, viewers witness the life of Vallabhbhai Patel—his rise as one of India's greatest freedom fighters, his role in the independence movement, partition, and ultimately the triumph of independence. The film won two National Film Awards, for Best Editing and Best Film on National Integration.

3/6

'The Accidental Prime Minister'

Directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, 'The Accidental Prime Minister' is based on the life of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Inspired by Sanjaya Baru’s memoir, the film stars Anupam Kher as Singh and Akshaye Khanna as Baru. Upon the release of its trailer in 2019, the film sparked significant controversy. It depicts Singh’s tenure from 2004 to 2014 under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

4/6

Thackeray

'Thackeray,' a biopic on Balasaheb Thackeray, released in January 2019 with Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role. Amrita Rao portrayed Meena Thackeray, while Vishal Sudarshanwar and Mukund Gosavi played Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, respectively. Sachin Jayavant was also part of the cast. The film, directed by Abhijit Panse and written by Arvind Jagtap, was released shortly after Balasaheb’s 93rd birth anniversary.

5/6

'PM Narendra Modi'

Omung Kumar, the filmmaker behind acclaimed biopics Mary Kom and Sarbjit, directed 'PM Narendra Modi,' based on the life of India’s 14th prime minister. Vivek Oberoi starred as Narendra Modi, while his father, veteran actor Suresh Oberoi, co-produced the film. Despite the star power, the movie was widely panned, particularly for Vivek’s performance.

6/6

'Ajey'

The upcoming biopic 'Ajey,' based on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, will feature Anant Vijay Joshi in the lead role. Inspired by Shantanu Gupta’s book The Monk Who Became Chief Minister, the film is directed by Ravindra Gautam. The cast includes Pawan Malhotra, Ajay Mengi, Garima Vikrant Singh, Rajesh Khattar, and Bhojpuri star Dineshlal Yadav Nirahua. The screenplay is co-written by Dilip Bachchan Jha and Priyank Dubey, with Ritu Mengi onboard as producer.
