Hansal Mehta says Guru Dutt was “not a great actor”; Javed Akhtar reveals an unknown fact about 'Pyaasa' movie
Even 100 years after his birth, Guru Dutt’s impact on Indian cinema is still deeply felt. The legendary director of classics like 'Pyaasa' and 'Kaagaz Ke Phool' continues to inspire modern filmmakers such as Sudhir Mishra, R. Balki, and Hansal Mehta. As the film industry marks his centenary, Hansal Mehta shared an honest and bold opinion—he feels Guru Dutt was a much stronger filmmaker than actor.
Guru Dutt a better director than actor
Speaking at a centenary event honouring the legendary filmmaker, Mehta stated, “The principal performances in Guru Dutt’s films are remarkably not great. This is my personal, unpopular opinion — Guru Dutt himself was not a great actor."Mehta praises Guru Dutt’s strength as a visual storytelling
Hansal went on to explain that Guru Dutt’s true brilliance lay in his mastery of visual and emotional storytelling. According to him, Dutt’s strong directorial craft often made up for what he felt were average performances, “But the craft, the overall cinema of that moment was stronger. It wasn’t dependent on that one central performance," he said.He further said, “It was all the elements of cinema coming together — lighting, framing, the way scenes were staged. When you talk about craft, you often say, ‘Arey, performance itna achha nahi hai’. You don’t notice other aspects of filmmaking."
Mehta on the visual impact of 'Pyaasa'
While reflecting on Guru Dutt’s famous scene in 'Pyaasa', where he stands with arms outstretched during the song, “Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaye Toh Kya Hai" plays. Because the cinematic experience is so powerful, it overpowers his own inadequacy as an actor. So, you remember that frame, him standing like Jesus Christ, but as an actor, I found him fairly blank if I look at him. I don’t need to because everything else in that is so complete."Dilip Kumar was Guru Dutt’s first choice for 'Pyaasa'
In an interesting revelation, legendary writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar shared that 'Pyaasa' was not initially meant to star Guru Dutt. Speaking at an event, Akhtar disclosed that Dutt had first approached none other than Dilip Kumar to play the heartbroken poet at the center of the film’s tragic love triangle.Regretted saying no
Despite Guru’s heartfelt offer, Dilip Kumar turned it down once again, believing it would be impractical to reshoot a film already in progress. Javed shared that the legendary actor later confessed he had only a few regrets in his career and 'Pyaasa' was one of them.Speaking candidly, Akhtar said, “Dilip sahab told me he repents three films he refused. Baiju Bawra (1952) was one of them — maybe because he couldn’t understand the intensity. And 'Pyaasa'. And third, I’m very shyly saying, Zanjeer,"
