Fans hoping for a sequel to the beloved 2007 romantic drama 'Jab We Met' may have to make peace with disappointment. Director
Imtiaz Ali has officially put the idea to rest, saying he has no plans to revisit either 'Jab We Met' or 'Tamasha', and his reasons are as thoughtful as the films themselves. Let's take a look at what he has to say.
Imtiaz Ali on 'Jab We Met' and 'Tamasha' sequel
In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Imtiaz Ali addressed the long-running demand for a 'Jab We Met 2', pointing to his own experience with sequels as a cautionary tale. "I do keep hearing about it. To those who ask me about them, I say, 'Love Aaj Kal 2' bhi toh banayi thi na, voh toh itni achhi nahi gayi,'" he said, referencing his 2020 follow-up that failed to replicate the magic of its predecessor.
In the same conversation, about 'Jab We Met' specifically, Imtiaz was even more definitive. He explained, "I feel that if there's something that comes that strongly to me as a maker, then I will." The filmmaker added, "But I don't think, especially for 'Jab We Met', I won't. Some things are best left untouched."
For those unaware, both 'Jab We Met' (2007) and 'Tamasha' (2015) are widely regarded as among his finest work.
Imtiaz Ali shares he doesn't want to make movies just for the sake of earning money
Beyond sequels, Imtiaz Ali also spoke about his broader philosophy towards choosing projects. He made it clear that commercial calculations have no place in his creative process. He said, "I don't want to start from a point of view of 'this is a money-making plan, like a professional move.' Good films cannot be made that way. They have to come from a point 'Oh, this is a nice story. I want to be in this world.'"
