Is Karisma Kapoor linked to Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 crore estate dispute? Here's what we know
A month after industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s death on June 12, 2025, fresh developments have emerged around a Rs 30,000 crore property dispute involving his family. According to India.com, ahead of Sona Comstar’s annual general meeting, Sunjay’s mother Rani Kapur claimed she holds the majority stake in the Sona Group and is the rightful owner of the estate. She alleged that some individuals are attempting to usurp the family’s legacy and clarified she has not appointed anyone as Sona Group’s representative.
Meanwhile, Rani further shared that her bank account has been frozen, leaving her in a financially difficult situation. For those unaware, Karisma married Sunjay in 2003. The couple had two children, Samaira and Kiaan, before separating after 11 years of marriage. Sunjay’s mortal remains were flown from London to Delhi and laid to rest on June 19.
Sunjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, has raised serious concerns regarding decisions made within the Sona Group following her son’s passing. In a letter addressed to shareholders, the board of directors, and SEBI, Rani alleged that she was coerced into signing documents during a period of deep emotional distress after Sunjay’s death. She claimed that important decisions were taken without her knowledge or presence and questioned the inclusion of certain individuals, including her daughter-in-law Priya Sachdev Kapur, in the company’s board. Rani also expressed suspicion over individuals now claiming to be the largest stakeholders in the company by representing the family's interests—stating that the documents she was pressured to sign are now being misused.
Back in 2016, Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur officially ended their 11-year marriage. As per a report by Hindustan Times, Sunjay had invested Rs 14 crore in bonds for their children, with an annual interest payout of Rs 10 lakh. Karisma received full custody of their kids, while Sunjay was granted visitation rights. The report also stated that a property in Mumbai, originally belonging to Sunjay’s father, was transferred to Karisma as part of the settlement.
Sunjay, who had entered the Forbes list of World’s Billionaires in 2002, had a net worth of USD 12 billion (approx. Rs 10,300 crore) at the time of his death. A significant portion of this wealth comes from Sona Comstar—headquartered in Gurugram—which has a global footprint and employs over 5,000 people across India, China, Mexico, Serbia, and the United States.
Karisma Kapoor's Alleged Link
In a new report by Jagran, it was revealed that Karisma Kapoor—Sunjay’s ex-wife—is also demanding her share in his vast estate. However, neither Karisma nor her representatives have officially confirmed these claims. The story is developing, and details may evolve as more verified information becomes available.Rani Kapur Raises Allegations of Coercion and Misuse
