Boman Irani is revisiting two of his most loved performances and offering a perspective that could surprise fans. Speaking on a recent episode of Kiska Brand Bajega, he reflects on craft, ownership, and why characters that look alike on paper can feel worlds apart on screen.
Boman Irani on acting choices
In conversation with host Aditya Bhat, Irani explains what he believes an actor truly contributes. “I think what I bring to the table, like any good actor, is something you haven’t seen before. No one’s going to play that role the way I play it. It becomes my own,” he says.
He stresses that individuality must still serve the film. “Of course, you have to blend in. You have to blend into the persona you’re playing, into the world that’s been created. That’s a given,” he notes. Within those boundaries, he says, the job remains personal. “The interpretation has to be unique.”
'Munna Bhai MBBS' and '3 Idiots' comparison
Irani then highlights his roles in 'Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.' and '3 Idiots.' “If I compare myself in Three Idiots and Munna Bhai MBBS, it’s actually the same character. Nobody realizes it until I point it out,” he says.
He explains the overlap. Both men are principals. Both dislike the partners their daughters choose. Both see their belief systems tested and shaken. “Both characters are eccentric,” he adds.
Still, viewers respond to them as separate individuals. “They’re the same on paper, but when you watch them, the interpretation is completely different,” Irani says. He credits deliberate decisions, restraint, and respect for the film’s universe.
Irani resists easy labels. “And let’s not mistake it for versatility,” he says. “I don’t know if I’m a versatile actor. I really don’t.” He offers a simpler thought. “But my characters are different, and that’s why it gets interpreted as versatility.”
The episode circles back to a quiet idea. A personal identity grows from steady effort, not loud claims. Irani never tries to package himself. He describes the process and leaves the rest to the audience.
