Jimmy Shergill on his career: I wish I had someone to guide me
Actor Jimmy Shergill is doing a variety of work on digital platforms and trying to reinvent himself. However, today the actor is far more relaxed about his career as compared to his initial days in the industry. “Back in the day, I would be shooting for one film during the day, and one at night. Sleeping in the car and travelling so much, that was insane. Today, we do one project at a time because of the look of the character, so I am far more relaxed. Also earlier, I was new to the industry, so I couldn’t even change my dates,” says the Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster actor.
Jimmy says that while he loved his work, he was never the kind to chase numbers. “You just got to be at it. I loved working. I was never in the rat race back then. I was too new at that time to think about number games. I was just worried about improving my work and nervous about doing new things. I barely thought about numbers. Today, I have the experience of being in the industry for 27 years, so it’s easier to make choices.”
As the actor looks back at his journey, he admits, “I wish I had someone who could guide me. Somebody who was close to me. I had no such person from the industry. Whatever mistakes I made, they were all mine, but everything was a part of the learning process.”
‘Aazam was a brilliant film but they messed up (the promotions)’While talking about the mistakes he’s made in his career, he says, “Often a lot of things are promised to you. You think it’s a small film, nice film, so let me experiment. Then once you start shooting, people are cutting corners here and there. You get to know their intentions, but it’s too late because you have signed up for it. You do your bit with honesty and sincerity and then you move on. I did a film called Aazam and I was so excited about it. It was a brilliant film, and they were making it on a shoestring budget. But just as the release approached, they messed up (the promotions) and that is when you feel really bad.”
